Nightshade is a hack-and-slash action game developed by Sega WOW and released in 2003 for the PlayStation 2. A direct sequel to the 2002 Shinobi revival, it centers on Hibana, a kunoichi — a female shinobi — tasked with defending Tokyo after a rift opens between Earth and a demonic realm. Armed with a sword, she fights through waves of Hellspawn using a combat system built around chained attacks, Ninja Magic abilities, and aerial assault and defensive maneuvers. The game emphasizes fluid, aggressive combat across dynamic environments, including battles set atop moving vehicles such as fighter jets and trucks. Where its predecessor followed a male shinobi protagonist, Nightshade shifts focus to Hibana as the sole figure standing between Tokyo and the encroaching supernatural forces threatening to overwhelm it.
In Nightshade, the player plays as Hibana, a female counterpart to Shinobi 's Hotsuma. She is a government-employed ninja tasked with the elimination of members of the Nakatomi Corporation, which has unwittingly unleashed hellspawn upon futuristic Tokyo. She is also ordered to recover the shards of "Akujiki", the legendary cursed sword that Hotsuma used to seal the hellspawn the last time.
