Released in 2011 by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendogs + Cats: Golden Retriever & New Friends is a pet simulation game centered on raising and interacting with virtual dogs and cats. This version starts players with the golden retriever breed, though more than 20 distinct breeds can be unlocked across gameplay. Kittens are a notable addition to the series, joining puppies as animals players can care for and interact with. The title is one of three versions of the software released simultaneously, each distinguished by a different set of starting breeds — the others featuring the French bulldog and toy poodle respectively. The game takes advantage of the 3DS hardware to present the animals in a realistic and interactive fashion, with the core experience built around tending to and spending time with the virtual pets.
In Nintendogs + Cats, you start at the Kennel where you're told to select a dog from the many avaliable breeds. Once selected, you take them home, and ease them into a point where you can teach them a name. Once named, you must teach them the tutorial command of 'Sit', then once completed you're set into a sandbox-like state where you can go shopping, walk your dog, play with your dog or enter competitions. Nintendogs + Cats has no overt storyline, and seemingly no clear ending. Some consider the goal to get the 'Robodog Voucher' with the collectable recycling mechanic, or get the highest amount of unlockables with the 'Trainer Points', some consider it to be winning competitions, but it really up to the player to truly decide what the ending is and how they wish to play Nintendogs + Cats.
