Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat is a 3D action-adventure game developed by Westwood Studios and released in 2002 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Players control Katarina de Leon, a pirate known as the Black Kat, as she navigates five distinct island worlds in pursuit of treasure, power, and status among other pirates. Combat occurs both on land and at sea — on foot, Katarina wields weapons including daggers, cutlasses, and sabers, with skills improving through experience. Naval battles require careful positioning and timing, as ships align to fire port- and starboard-mounted cannons that must be reloaded after each shot, while managing hull damage in real time. Progression allows access to a dozen vessel types, from basic gunboats up to a man-of-war, each upgradeable with special equipment. Role-playing elements support Katarina's storyline, and a separate Captain vs. Captain mode provides a more freeform, combat-focused alternative.
