R-Type Final is a horizontal scrolling shooter developed by Irem and released for PlayStation 2 in 2003, serving as a concluding entry in the long-running R-Type series. Players pilot a spacecraft through a series of stages populated by waves of enemies and large boss encounters at the end of each level. The game's most distinctive feature is its roster of over 100 selectable ships, each with different capabilities. All ships share a core combat system built around a basic shot and a charged burst, with power-ups appearing during stages that add lasers, missiles, and other weapons to the player's arsenal. Alongside the main campaign, R-Type Final includes an AI VS mode in which the player configures one of their unlocked fighters to be controlled by the computer and then pits it against other craft in a series of battles.
In R-Type Final, your enemy is the Bydo, an evil (and living) weapon capable of reproducing itself. Humanity has fought the Bydo four times so far, and each time was victorious. However, each time the Bydo appears it is stronger than before, and now it's back and you need to destroy it again!
