Retaliate is a retro-styled arcade space shooter developed by Romans I XVI Gaming and released in 2024 for PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The central mechanic sets it apart from classic genre entries: the player begins with no ammunition whatsoever. Rather than relying on a standard weapon loadout, the player uses a shield to intercept and absorb enemy fire, then turns those captured projectiles back against opposing forces. The game includes a story mode in which the player uncovers who has seized control of the galaxy's weapons supply. Beyond the narrative campaign, three additional modes are available — Endless, which targets high scores; Trials, focused on level mastery; and Classic, the original format that preceded the full release. A hangar feature allows cosmetic customization of both the ship and its shield. The vertically scrolling presentation draws from golden-age arcade shooters while building its identity around the resource-conversion mechanic.
