Released in 2023 by Mad Head Games, Scars Above is a sci-fi third-person shooter and adventure game available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. The game follows Dr. Kate Ward, a scientist and member of the SCAR team — a group of engineers and researchers dispatched to examine a massive alien structure that has appeared in Earth's orbit. When the structure transports the team to a hostile extrasolar planet, Kate finds herself isolated and must locate her crewmates while surviving an environment full of deadly threats. Combat centers on elemental attack combinations, ranged weapons, melee, and crafted gadgets, with stamina management and enemy weak points factoring into encounters. Kate's scientific background is also mechanically relevant: scanning creatures, artifacts, and materials yields data that feeds into research trees covering Xenobiology and Engineering, unlocking new abilities and equipment. The alien world spans multiple biomes — marshlands, frozen wastes, caverns, and ruins — each housing distinct enemies, hazards, and signs of a vanished ancient civilization.
A colossal and enigmatic alien structure appears in Earth's orbit and stuns the entire world; humanity names it ‘The Metahedron’.
