Sentient is a first-person point-and-click adventure developed by Psygnosis and released in 1997 for PlayStation, PC, and DOS. Set aboard a space station, the game tasks the player with preventing disaster by navigating a crew of more than 60 AI-controlled characters, each operating according to their own schedules, roles, and relationships. Interaction takes place through an elaborate conversational parser that allows the player to query crew members about equipment locations, station events, and their opinions of fellow personnel — social maneuvering is central to progression. The station itself comprises over 200 real-time rendered locations. A randomization system reshuffles subplots between playthroughs, altering the circumstances the player encounters. The combination of a dynamic cast with individually modeled behaviors and a flexible dialogue interface distinguished Sentient from more conventional adventure games of the period.
You are sent to investigate an outbreak of radiation sickness aboard the space station Icarus, but once aboard, you realize your primary objective is the least of your worries. The captain has been murdered, an assassin threatens a visiting senior Senator, and a power struggle arises as the station careens toward the sun. Save yourself, or save the ship?
