Sleep Is Death is a two-player storytelling game for PC developed by Jason Rohrer, the designer behind Passage, and released in 2010. One player takes the role of a character navigating a scene, while the other acts as a controller — arranging environments, placing objects, and directing non-player characters in real time to craft a responsive narrative. The exchange unfolds in tight turns, pushing both participants to improvise and react quickly. Rather than following a scripted story, the game generates its narrative entirely through the interaction between the two players, making each session unique. Rohrer designed the experience around collaborative fiction, giving the controlling player tools to build and manipulate scenes on the fly. The result sits at the intersection of point-and-click adventure, role-playing, and improvisational storytelling, foregrounding human creativity over predetermined content.
