Sonic Rivals is a side-scrolling platform racing game developed by Backbone Entertainment for the PlayStation Portable, released in 2006. The game pits pairs of characters in competitive footraces through each stage, with Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, and Silver the Hedgehog all playable across their own story threads. The central conflict involves a device wielded by the villain that transforms characters — including Tails, Amy Rose, Rouge, and the Master Emerald — into cards, driving each hero toward the same goal through different motivations. Knuckles races to recover the Master Emerald, Shadow pursues a mysterious hedgehog from the future named Silver, and the stories converge on a shared antagonist whose true identity is revealed over the course of the campaign. Stages are designed to be completed faster by defeating a rival opponent, blending traditional Sonic platforming with a persistent competitive element throughout.
