Spectrobes is a 2007 role-playing and strategy game developed by Jupiter Corporation for the Nintendo DS, published by Disney Interactive as the company's first original intellectual property. Players take on the role of a planetary patrol officer who excavates fossilized creatures called Spectrobes from the ground, revives them, and raises them to battle a hostile alien force known as the Krawl. The core gameplay loop revolves around fossil excavation, creature nurturing, and turn-based combat in which trained Spectrobes are deployed against enemies. The game blends creature-collection mechanics reminiscent of established RPG franchises with Disney's production values, establishing a new universe distinct from any preexisting Disney property. Its release marked a notable shift in Disney Interactive's publishing strategy toward developing wholly original game-based franchises rather than adapting existing media licenses.
