Spectrobes: Origins is an action RPG developed by Genki and released for the Wii in 2009. Players control human protagonists who fight alongside creature companions called Spectrobes in real-time combat, managing both their own character and their monsters simultaneously on the battlefield. The human characters can equip a variety of weapons tied to different elements and fighting styles, including bladed, gauntlet, ranged, and heavy melee options. Both the human leads and their Spectrobes gain experience and level up independently, requiring players to balance progression across the entire roster. A fossil excavation system provides a recurring method for discovering and unlocking new Spectrobes, adding a layer of collection and exploration to the experience. The game draws comparisons to classic action battle systems with some resemblance to Monster Hunter in its structural approach, though its environments are considered inconsistent in quality.
The main story follows the two protagonists, Rallen and Jeena, when they are sent through a portal which leads them to another star system which is being invaded by a massive army of Krawl. They must use the Cosmolink, an ancient device for summoning Spectrobes, to defeat the Krawl leader, Krux, to finally bring peace to the star system once and for all.
