Released in 2000 for PlayStation 2, SSX is an arcade-style snowboarding game developed by EA Canada and the first entry in the long-running SSX series. Rather than pursuing realism, it emphasizes exaggerated jumps, improbable tricks, and heavily stylized mountain courses set at locations around the world. Players compete across multiple event types, earning medals that unlock additional courses, characters, and boards, while also improving their boarder's core abilities. Completing a character's trick book by executing specific tricks during runs rewards new outfits. Three board categories are available — Freestyle boards tuned for tricks, all-around BX boards, and forward-riding Alpine boards built for racing. The game's roster draws from an international cast of snowboarders, each speaking their native language. The overall design prioritizes spectacle and momentum over simulation, making it a distinctly arcade-oriented take on the sport.
