Released in 2004 for PC, Jump to Lightspeed was the first expansion pack for Sony Online Entertainment's MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies, adding a substantial space combat layer to the existing ground-based gameplay. Set in the period between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, the expansion opened ten outer space sectors—including areas surrounding the game's planets, Kessel, and Deep Space—for exploration and combat. Players can pilot more than twenty starship types, among them X-wings, TIE Fighters, and YT-1300 freighters, alongside vessels designed exclusively for the expansion. Space combat is real-time and twitch-based, with optional joystick support, contrasting with the turn-based mechanics already present on the ground. A new Pilot sub-profession offers three faction alignments—Rebel, Imperial, or Freelance—while the Shipwright profession allows players to craft and reverse-engineer ships and components. The expansion also introduced numerous space missions and two playable species: Sullustan and Ithorian.
