Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is a Japanese role-playing game developed by Square and released in 1996 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Famicom, later made available on Wii and Wii U. The game transplants Mario into a traditional RPG framework, following him as he assembles an unlikely group of allies to traverse the Mushroom Kingdom. The central conflict involves Smithy, an otherworldly villain who seizes Bowser's castle and throws the Kingdom into chaos. In doing so, Smithy shatters the Star Road — a pathway through which people's wishes are granted — scattering seven stars across the land. Mario's quest centers on recovering these stars to restore the Star Road and set things right. The game blends turn-based combat with platformer-inspired mechanics, including timed action inputs during battles.
Set in the Mushroom Kingdom and featuring its cast of well-known characters, this adventure RPG begins with a familiar scenario: Mario must rescue Princess Toadstool from Bowser. However, a mysterious new enemy named Smithy soon appears, and Mario and Bowser are forced to fight as allies for the first time in their long history. In the quest to defeat their powerful new foe, they’ll journey across a wide variety of locations and tackle a mix of obstacles requiring both expert timing and strategy to overcome. Along the way, they’ll gain experience and grow more powerful, while also meeting new characters whose unique abilities will be needed to take on Smithy and his gang.
