Super Mario World is a 2D platformer developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development, released in 1990 as a launch title for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, with later releases on platforms including the Wii, Wii U, and New Nintendo 3DS. The game follows Mario as he works through Bowser's forces to rescue Princess Peach. Building on its predecessors, it introduces a less linear world map that allows greater freedom in navigating stages, an expanded set of movement options, and a variety of new items. Level design and visual presentation received a notable overhaul compared to earlier entries in the series, and the game incorporates a save system, a feature new to the franchise at the time. As the first Super Mario release on the SNES, it established the direction for the series on the hardware.
Mario is having a vacation in Dinosaur Land when he learns that Princess Peach Toadstool has been kidnapped by the evil King Koopa Bowser. When Mario starts searching for her he finds a giant egg with a dinosaur named Yoshi hatching out of it. Yoshi tells Mario that his fellow dinosaurs have been imprisoned in eggs by Bowser's underlings. The intrepid plumber has to travel to their castles, rescue the dinosaurs, and eventually face King Koopa himself, forcing him to release the princess.
