Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo is a puzzle arcade game developed by Backbone Entertainment and released in 1996 for arcades, Sega Saturn, and PlayStation. Conceived partly as a response to the popularity of Sega's Puyo Puyo 2 in Japanese arcades, the game borrows its characters and aesthetic from Capcom's Street Fighter and Darkstalkers franchises, incorporating music and interface elements that parody those series. Its title directly spoofs Super Street Fighter II Turbo, a joke reinforced by the fact that no other Puzzle Fighter games exist. Gameplay involves dropping and matching colored gem blocks to build up combinations and attack opponents. The title's name and presentation are intentionally overwrought as a comedic reference to the fighting game genre's naming conventions of the era. A high-definition remake, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, was later made available on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.
