Super Stardust HD is an arcade shooter developed by Finnish studio Housemarque, released for the PlayStation 3 in 2007 and distributed as a downloadable title. A fully updated revival of the classic Stardust series, the game tasks players with destroying waves of enemies and asteroids across five detailed 3D planets. Combat is relentless, with hordes of threats requiring constant engagement across multiple gameplay modes. The title holds a notable place in PlayStation 3 history as the first game to feature trophy support on the platform. A later update added stereoscopic 3D display compatibility, along with Simulview technology for cooperative play, which allows two players on a single 3D television to simultaneously view entirely separate perspectives of the game. Standard display hardware remains fully supported. The game is also known as Star Strike HD in Japan.
In Super Stardust HD, the player controls a space fighter craft that can move in any direction on a spherical shield surrounding a planet, while simultaneously firing in any direction independent of its movement. The primary threats against the player are three types of asteroids and various enemy spacecraft, which appear on the playfield at certain time intervals. The ship is equipped with three upgradeable weapons, a limited arsenal of bombs, and a boost capability that grants temporary invincibility and recharges after use. Each weapon is more effective against certain types of asteroid and enemies than others. Items include weapon upgrades and a shield that absorbs one fatal hit against the player's ship.
