A tactical shooter developed by Irrational Games and released for PC in 2005, SWAT 4 places players in command of a police tactical unit responding to high-risk situations. The game strongly discourages lethal force, rewarding players for subduing and arresting suspects rather than killing them. A strict use-of-force protocol governs when lethal weapons can be deployed — officers may only open fire if a suspect directly threatens a fellow officer or civilian. Penalties are assessed for unauthorized force, hostage injuries, officer incapacitation, and personal harm. Missions are scored out of 100, with higher difficulty levels demanding greater scores to pass. On the hardest setting, Elite, players must achieve at least 95 out of 100, and will fail for killing any suspect, losing more than two team members, or sustaining personal injury alongside any infraction — making precision and restraint essential throughout.
