Released in 2012 by Starbreeze Studios for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, Syndicate is a first-person shooter set in a dystopian 2069 where governments have collapsed and powerful megacorporations wage brutal proxy wars for market dominance. Three corporations — Eurocorp, Cayman Global, and Aspari — compete for control of the American market in a world where human beings are networked into a pervasive digital infrastructure. The central gameplay mechanic revolves around the DART 6 bio-chip, a neural implant that grants the player the ability to slow time and interface directly with the digital environment. This breach system allows for a range of upgradable hacking actions against enemies and surroundings, complementing conventional gunplay. The combination of standard shooter combat with chip-based electronic warfare gives the game a hybrid shooter-puzzle character, distinguishing it from straightforward action titles of its era.
