Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain is a third-person shooter developed by SCE Bend Studio and released for the PlayStation 2 in 2004, marking the fourth entry in the Syphon Filter series. Players take on the role of a new recruit working under veteran agent Gabe Logan as part of an agency responding to a worldwide bioterrorism crisis. The central threat is the Omega Strain, a deadly virus being spread by terrorist forces across multiple global locations. The game places greater emphasis on cooperative play compared to its predecessors, supporting online multiplayer for the PlayStation 2's network adapter, allowing several players to tackle missions together. As a recruit, the player builds skills and capabilities over the course of the campaign while confronting the escalating biological threat through a range of covert field operations.
The game starts in Carthage, Michigan when Imani Gray and four IPCA recruits are sent in to locate Lawrence Mujari and eliminate the French Anarchiste Liberation Army (ALA) threat. Gabriel Logan and Lian Xing investigate Uganda, and Gary Stoneman investigates Italy. The IPCA agents foil the ALA's plans. Mujari has recovered and is under medical care. Meanwhile, Stone discovers that Cosa Nostra wants to retrieve the virus to use it as a tool in mafia wars. Stone goes on a mission to Pescara to assassinate the mafia head, Dimitri Alexoupolos. Dimitri's assassination prevents a Mafia family from gaining access to Syphon Filter.
