The 3rd Birthday is an action role-playing shooter developed by HexaDrive and released in 2010 for PlayStation Portable. The central mechanic is "Overdive," a system that allows protagonist Aya Brea to transfer her consciousness into allied soldiers during combat, switching control between teammates in real time. Players can also issue commands to uncontrolled allies, directing them to attack specific enemies or hold a defensive position. Combat is presented from an over-the-shoulder perspective similar to Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space, blending third-person shooting with RPG elements in what Square Enix characterized as a cinematic experience with gameplay and narrative tightly connected. Aya's clothing degrades as she sustains damage throughout battle.
