Developed by Samurai Punk and released in 2018, The American Dream is a satirical first-person shooter and adventure game built exclusively for virtual reality platforms, including PlayStation VR, SteamVR, Oculus Rift, and Meta Quest 2. Set in a 1950s retrofuturist fantasy, the game places players inside a sprawling complex constructed by fictional gun manufacturers, premised on the absurd notion that firearms are the solution to every ordinary life situation. A talking dog named Buddy Washington serves as narrator and guide throughout the fully voiced, single-player campaign, which spans more than 20 levels. Across these stages, players encounter interactive environments and wield an assortment of weapons — pistols, shotguns, SMGs, and tactical rifles — applying them to mundane domestic and social scenarios as a form of dark comedy. The narrative-driven structure uses the conventions of mid-century Americana to lampoon gun culture and the mythology surrounding it.
