Released in 2002 by Maxis for Windows and Mac, The Sims: Unleashed is the fifth expansion pack for The Sims, a life simulation strategy title. Its central addition is a pet ownership system that treats animals as active Sims rather than static objects, bringing with it the daily responsibilities of animal care. Alongside dogs and cats, the expansion introduces gardening as a new activity: Sims can cultivate vegetable plots, store harvests in a pantry, and either sell produce at a farmer's market or consume it themselves. Cats serve a practical garden role by deterring rabbits and gophers from crops. Three new career tracks — Chef, Circus Performer, and Veterinarian — expand employment options, and over 125 new objects are available for both Sims and their animals. The expansion broadens the base game's domestic scope considerably, adding rural and animal-focused dimensions to everyday Sim life.
Sims can teach their puppy where to "go," or hire the Pet Trainer character to help with housebreaking. The local Pet Show is the place to display prized animals and impress the judges with obedience, temperament, and tricks. Pets also provide a new way for Sims to make new human acquaintances, as a walk in the park is a good way to meet other pet-friendly neighbors. In addition to canine and feline companions, The Sims: Unleashed also lets Sims purchase parrots, lizards, turtles, and other pet shop companions who may require less constant attention.
