Released in 2019 by Pelikan13, The TakeOver is a side-scrolling beat 'em up for PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch that draws clear inspiration from 1990s arcade classics like Streets of Rage and Final Fight. Players choose from four characters and fight through seven stages spanning more than 20 distinct locations, either solo or with a friend in local co-op. Three modes are available — Arcade, Survival, and Challenge — alongside an unlockable Relay Mode that allows real-time character swapping. Combat centers on a combo system that chains punches and kicks, with options to juggle airborne enemies or keep grounded foes stunned; sustained combos fill a Super meter that unlocks powerful special attacks. Scattered weapons such as crowbars, swords, and machine guns add variety, and each character carries a limited-ammo sidearm. Three difficulty settings accommodate different skill levels, with Hard mode removing continues entirely. The soundtrack features contributions from Little V Mills, Richie Branson, James Ronald, and Yuzo Koshiro.
The gameplay is designed around a new combo system that allows you to link together punches and kicks. Quickly put enemies in to the ground, keep them stunned or launch them in to the air and continue to juggle! Maintaining a combo will fill your Super meter faster and allow you to unleash a devastating attack. You can also find and use weapons such as crowbars, swords and machine guns scattered around the levels. Last but not least, each character is equipped with a unique sidearm but ammunition is scarce so use it wisely! The game is easy to get in to but not easy to master.
