Tobal No. 1 is a 1996 PlayStation fighting game developed by DreamFactory and published by Square. The studio was founded with Square's backing specifically for this project, with Seiichi Ishii — a veteran of both Tekken and Virtua Fighter — leading development. The game blends arcade fighting with a distinct quest mode, broadening the experience beyond standard one-on-one bouts. Combat incorporates limited three-dimensional movement, enabling behind-the-back attacks uncommon in contemporaries of the era. A notable grapple system allows players to seize opponents and execute a variety of throws depending on button input, adding depth to the close-range game. Characters are rendered using Gouraud shading in a high-resolution 640x480 display mode, giving the visuals a polished appearance for the time. The game also shipped with a playable demo of Final Fantasy VII included on the disc.
