Townscaper is a relaxed town-building toy developed by Oskar Stålberg and released in 2020, available on PC, Mac, iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Rather than presenting objectives or traditional gameplay loops, it functions as an open-ended creative sandbox with no goals or win conditions. Players select colors from a palette and place blocks onto an irregular grid, while an underlying algorithm interprets each placement and automatically generates coherent architectural details — houses, arches, stairways, bridges, and small gardens — based on how the blocks are arranged relative to one another. The result is an ever-evolving coastal townscape that organically takes shape through simple inputs. Stålberg describes it explicitly as an experimental passion project, closer in spirit to an interactive toy than a conventional game, prioritizing the pleasure of construction and visual charm over challenge or progression.
Build quaint island towns with curvy streets. Build small hamlets, soaring cathedrals, canal networks, or sky cities on stilts. Block by block. No goal. No real gameplay. Just plenty of building and plenty of beauty. That's it.
