Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue! is a 3D platformer developed by Traveller's Tales and released in 1999 for Nintendo 64, PlayStation, Dreamcast, and PC. Based on the Pixar film of the same name, the game follows Buzz Lightyear as he travels from the bedroom to the outside world in pursuit of a villainous toy collector who has kidnapped Woody with plans to sell him. Players guide Buzz through environments populated by characters from the film, using his laser cannon and jumping abilities to overcome obstacles. Platforming challenges extend to reaching elevated or out-of-the-way areas, and scattered coins serve a mechanical purpose beyond collection — accumulating enough unlocks bonus levels. The game translates the film's setting and cast into an action-adventure framework built around exploration and combat across a series of progressively open locations.
The game's plot follows that of the film pretty closely and like the film begins with the kidnapping of Woody by evil collector Al McWhiggin outside of Andy's house. The game then follows Buzz Lightyear and his companions as they set out to rescue the captured cowboy as the traverse the nearby neighborhood, Al's Toy Barn, Al's penthouse and finally the airport terminal and tarmac at the film's end.
