Released in 2000 for PlayStation and Dreamcast, Ultimate Fighting Championship is a 3D fighting game developed around the real-world mixed martial arts organization that rose to prominence in the 1990s. The sport's premise — competitors from any martial arts background facing one another with minimal restrictions, bouts ending only by submission — forms the foundation of the game's design. Players select from a roster of established UFC fighters or build a custom fighter through the Career Mode. In that mode, character creation begins by choosing a base style template, after which the fighter progresses through a series of increasingly difficult opponents. Victories earn points that can be spent on attribute upgrades covering stamina, endurance, striking power in both punches and kicks, and the acquisition of specific combat techniques. The overall aim is to simulate the tactical, multi-discipline nature of actual MMA competition.
