Vernal Edge is a 2D Metroidvania developed by PluswPlus, released in 2023 for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S. Set in the Kingdom of Haricot — a land of floating islands ruled by the authoritarian Church of Aloe — the game follows Vernal, a young woman searching for her estranged father with the help of an amnesiac automaton named Chervil. Players explore towns and dungeons across the archipelago, acquiring new abilities as they go, and can travel between islands in a largely open order using an aircraft. Combat is combo- and spell-based, rewarding mastery of Vernal's varied moveset. Platforming sequences make use of running, dashing, and sliding through detailed pixel art environments. The narrative centers on themes of revenge, personal rivalry, and self-discovery as the mysteries of Haricot gradually come to light.
The Kingdom of Haricot stands out as a complete mystery as 20 years before the event of the story, it inexplicably took to the skies, turning into a series of disconnected floating islands, allowing the power-hungry Church of Aloe to take hold of the land. Entering Haricot by sneaking on one of the Church’s aircrafts, Vernal has a personal disdain for the Church and its agents. She is an independant adventurer, travelling through Haricot as she searches for revenge on her long-gone deadbeat dad. Blessed with an abnormal martial prowess and helped by the amnesiac automaton Chervil, she goes through the different islands of the Kingdom with her own aircraft.
