Viva Piñata: Pocket Paradise is a garden simulation game developed by Rare and released for the Nintendo DS in 2008. Players take over an overgrown, neglected plot on Piñata Island and gradually transform it into a thriving habitat by clearing land, cultivating plants, and attracting, caring for, and breeding piñata creatures. The game introduces seven species exclusive to this version, each with distinct requirements, housing, and cutscenes. Twelve full-motion video clips featuring characters from the Fox 4Kids animated series — including Hudson Horstashio, Fergy Fudgehog, and Paulie Pretztail — double as in-game tutorials. A dedicated Playground mode lets players quickly populate a garden with a wide variety of piñatas without the slower progression of the main experience. The Nintendo DS local wireless functionality allows item transfers between players' gardens and serves as the only means of obtaining certain rare piñata species.
