Wargasm is a 1998 PC strategy title from Digital Image Design that blends real-time strategy with direct unit control. Players manage battlefield forces from a top-down strategic perspective, issuing orders and coordinating units across three-dimensional terrain, but can drop into the action at any moment by taking direct control of any individual unit. This seamless transition between commanding the broader engagement and piloting a specific vehicle or soldier on the ground incorporates shooter and racing mechanics into what might otherwise be a conventional RTS. The hybrid structure allows the same conflict to be experienced at both the macro level of tactical planning and the immediate, ground-level perspective of a single combatant, giving players meaningful agency across multiple scales of play within a single session.
