Way of the Samurai is a 2002 action-adventure game developed by ACQUIRE Corp., released for PlayStation 2 and later PlayStation Portable. Set in 1878 during the twilight of the samurai era — the transitional period between the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the rise of the Meiji Restoration — the game follows a wandering swordsman who becomes entangled in a struggle between two rival factions, the Kurofu family and the Akadama Clan, over control of an iron foundry. Players navigate this conflict through a combination of combat, deception, and betrayal, with choices shaping how events unfold. Dozens of collectable swords are available throughout the game, each tied to a distinct fighting style, giving players meaningful variation in how they approach confrontations.
The Tokugawa shogunate, a Samurai clan that unified Japan during the sengoku period for 265 years has fallen, and now ten years later when the very people who once ruled Japanese society (Samurai) have been outlawed, a lone ronin (Samurai without a lord) has arrived in Rakkotsu Pass. With three factions competing for control of the outpost, it is your decisions that will dictate who will rise, who will fall, and ultimately who will survive this turbulent time.
