Ape Escape 3 is a platformer developed by SCE Japan Studio for the PlayStation 2, released in 2005. Players control either Kei or Yumi across a wide variety of themed stages — including haunted castles, jungle environments, racing courses, and TV studios — with the objective of capturing all 400 escaped monkeys. The core catching mechanics return from the series, using tools such as a stun club and slingback shooter to slow targets before netting them. The main addition in this installment is a set of eight morph transformations, allowing characters to temporarily take on roles like a knight capable of powerful melee strikes, a gunfighter, or a ninja who can run along walls. A race car can also be used to bowl over monkeys. Returning features include the Monkeypedia encyclopedia, and an unlockable mini-game called Mesal Gear Solid, a comedic parody of the Metal Gear Solid series.
