Asheron's Call is a fantasy MMORPG developed by Turbine Entertainment and originally published under Microsoft's banner, releasing for Windows in November 1999. It was among the earliest major entries in the genre, arriving alongside contemporaries such as Ultima Online and EverQuest. The game takes place on Dereth, an island continent on the fictional planet Auberean, along with a number of surrounding islands and archipelagos. Players explored this setting through a large, seamless three-dimensional world capable of hosting thousands of simultaneous characters. Though its subscriber base declined as newer MMORPGs entered the market, the game demonstrated considerable longevity — its servers remained operational for more than seventeen years following launch. Publishing responsibilities transferred away from Microsoft in 2004, after which Turbine managed the title independently.
The story for players began in Portal Year 10. Through the game's monthly updates the story unfolds. Not only do players experience the current events of the world, but as the months go on and they explore, they learn much about the past. Several monthly updates build upon each other, forming a story arc. Each story arc usually lasts around one year.
