Burnout Paradise is an open-world arcade racing game developed by Criterion Games, released in 2008 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Departing from the closed-circuit structure of its predecessors, the game places drivers in a large, freely explorable city environment where races, stunts, and other challenges are distributed across the open map rather than selected from a menu. The design encourages aggressive, high-speed driving, rewarding risk-taking and reckless behavior consistent with the series' identity. A notable feature is the seamless online multiplayer integration, which allows friends to join or drop into a session without interrupting the action. The shift to an open city represented a significant redesign of the franchise's structure, prioritizing continuous exploration and spontaneous competition over discrete, track-based events.
