Contra: Shattered Soldier is a 2002 run-and-gun shooter developed for PlayStation 2 and later available on PlayStation 3. Set in the year 2642, the game follows Bill Rizer, a veteran soldier from the Alien Wars who has been imprisoned for 10,000 years in cryogenic stasis after being blamed for the deaths of 80% of Earth's population caused by a malfunctioning weapons grid, as well as for allegedly murdering his partner, Lance Bean. When the terrorist organization Blood Falcon emerges to threaten a war-scarred Earth in 2647, the ruling Triumvirate government releases Bill early and pairs him with Lucia, a cyborg soldier constructed from government research, to neutralize the threat. The campaign unfolds across intense side-scrolling stages, gradually revealing that Lance Bean leads Blood Falcon, and that the Triumvirate itself conceals a dangerous secret tied to a stolen alien relic at the root of humanity's long history of extraterrestrial conflict.
