Super Contra is a run-and-gun action game developed by Konami and released as a coin-operated arcade title in 1988. The second entry in the Contra series, it serves as a direct sequel to the original arcade game and again follows soldiers Bill Rizer and Lance Bean as they battle an invading alien army threatening Earth. Gameplay alternates between traditional side-scrolling stages and top-down overhead stages, the latter replacing the pseudo-3D perspective sections found in the original game. Available on arcade hardware, PC, DOS, and Amiga, the title builds on the fast-paced, weapon-based combat of its predecessor while introducing the new overhead format to diversify the action across its stages.
A year after the battle with the Red Falcon Organization, Bill and Lance are sent on another mission. This time, the alien forces have taken over an allied military base, possessing most of its troops. Bill and Lance must not only fight against their former comrades-in-arms, but also a new mutated form of the same alien creatures they fought during their previous mission.
