Dante's Inferno is a third-person hack-and-slash action adventure developed by Visceral Games and released in 2010 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PlayStation Portable. Drawing on the first canticle of Dante Alighieri's 14th-century poem The Divine Comedy, the game follows a medieval interpretation of the journey through Hell. Gameplay centers on fast-paced combat running at 60 frames per second, with signature weapons that can be upgraded over the course of the campaign. Players chain together attack combos and cast mana-powered spells against enemies, and a defining mechanic allows defeated souls to be either punished or absolved, influencing character progression. The single-player experience frames its descent through hellish environments as a conflict between sin and damnation, adapting the source poem's moral and theological themes into an action-oriented console format.
