Diablo II is an action role-playing hack-and-slash game developed by Blizzard North and released in 2000 for Windows and Mac. Set within a dark fantasy world steeped in horror, the game follows a new hero tasked with confronting the chaos unleashed by Diablo's return. Gameplay unfolds across four acts, each featuring distinct locations and a varied cast of characters to encounter and control. Players battle through hordes of enemies, collecting loot and building their chosen character across multiple available classes. Free access to Battle.net made online multiplayer widely accessible, and the combination of that feature with the game's compulsive combat loop contributed to Diablo II becoming one of the most played online games of its era. It built substantially on its predecessor's foundation, expanding the scope of both its world and its roster of playable and non-playable characters.
Diablo II takes place after the end of the previous Diablo in the world of Sanctuary. An unnamed warrior defeated Diablo and attempted to contain the Lord of Terror's essence within his own body. Since then, the hero has become corrupted by the demon's spirit, causing demons to enter the world around him and wreak havoc. Again, it is up to a single mortal to stand in Diablo's path and to prevent the Three Prime Evils from reuniting. If that mortal fails, the world of Sanctuary will become a permanent outpost of the Burning Hells.
