Duke Nukem 3D is a first-person shooter developed by 3D Realms and released in 1996 for DOS, PC, and Mac, marking a significant departure from the series' earlier side-scrolling platformer roots. Set in a futuristic Los Angeles overrun by an alien invasion, the game follows the wisecracking Duke as he fights his way through the occupation using a substantial arsenal that includes pistols, pipe bombs, laser trip mines, a chain gun, Nordenfelt guns, various rocket launchers, and even a melee kick. The game uses 2.5D graphics and places considerable emphasis on environmental interactivity. Players can destroy or manipulate numerous objects throughout the levels, including arcade machines, pool tables, glass surfaces, light switches, and security cameras. This degree of interaction with the game world, combined with its mature and irreverent tone, distinguished Duke Nukem 3D from other shooters of the era.
