Released in 2015 by Frontier Developments for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation platforms, Elite: Dangerous – Horizons is an expansion to the space simulation that introduces seamless planetary landings across the game's full-scale Milky Way galaxy. Players transition directly from open space to the surfaces of accurately modeled planets and moons, choosing their own landing locations rather than following fixed approach paths. On the ground, players pilot SRV vehicles across terrain that includes mountain ranges and canyon systems, while pursuing objectives such as gathering resources, engaging in combat, raiding bases, and investigating crash sites. Surface activities can be undertaken solo or cooperatively with other players, who may simultaneously operate spacecraft overhead. Horizons was the first installment in a broader season of planned updates for Elite: Dangerous. As of October 27, 2020, the expansion was folded into the base game and is no longer available as a separate purchase.
