Galaga is a fixed shooter arcade game developed by Namco and released in 1981, later ported to platforms including the PC-9800 Series, Sharp X1, FM-7, MSX, and Xbox 360. Players pilot a starfighter restricted to horizontal movement along the bottom of the screen, facing waves of insect-like enemies that form up near the top before breaking formation to dive downward while firing. The goal is to accumulate as many points as possible before losing all fighters to collisions or enemy projectiles. Several mechanics distinguish Galaga from its predecessor, Galaxian. Players can fire multiple bullets simultaneously, and periodic bonus "Challenging Stages" present enemies flying in fixed patterns without attacking, rewarding a large point bonus for complete clearance. A notable capture mechanic allows boss Galaga enemies to seize the player's ship via tractor beam; destroying the captor mid-flight releases it and merges the two fighters, doubling firepower while enlarging the target. A hit-to-miss ratio is tallied at the game's end.
