Gladius is a turn-based strategy RPG developed by LucasArts and released in 2003 for Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, and PlayStation 2. Set in a gladiatorial world, the game centers on building and managing a gladiator school with the ultimate goal of achieving championship status. Players recruit new fighters and send them into arena combat, where battles unfold in a turn-based format. Victory in the arenas earns experience that strengthens existing gladiators, while a growing roster of recruits expands the school's capabilities over time. The progression loop balances team management with tactical combat decisions, rewarding players who develop their roster strategically. The game draws on the spectacle of ancient arena culture while layering RPG growth systems on top of its turn-based combat, making school-building and fighter development as central to the experience as the battles themselves.
The story of Gladius starts just as two schools begin the pursuit of the Championship. It follows the epic saga of two young heroes: Ursula, daughter of the barbarian king from the land of Nordagh; and Valens, the son of Imperia's greatest gladiator. Become one of these characters and embark upon a spectacular and brutal journey to fulfill their destinies to keep the world from heading into another disastrous war.
