God of War: Ascension is a hack-and-slash action-adventure game developed by SCE Santa Monica Studio and released in 2013 for PlayStation 3. The seventh entry in the series, it functions as a prequel, following Kratos before the events of earlier installments. After being deceived by Ares into killing his own family, Kratos breaks the blood oath tying him to the war god and must escape imprisonment while severing that bond entirely. Combat retains the series' signature Blades of Chaos but expands through a World Weapon system allowing Kratos to pick up and use various enemy arms. Four magical disciplines — tied to Ares, Poseidon, Zeus, and Hades — grant distinct elemental abilities. Three new relics enable time manipulation, creating a decoy self, and dispelling illusions. The Rage meter now fills through sustained attacks and discharges automatically. The game also introduced online multiplayer to the series, featuring four modes and a progression system in which players align with one of the four gods to unlock weapons, armor, and abilities.
In a war between the astronomically large deities known as the Primordials, the madness and rage of the war took form, becoming the three guardians of honor, the Furies, who were tasked with exacting retribution onto any oath-breaker or betrayer. The first victim of the Furies was the Hecatonchires, Aegaeon, who had broken a blood oath to Zeus himself. The Furies set about their task, and, believing death to be too kind for one who had broken an oath to a God, transformed Aegaeon's humongous body into a stone prison for all who would dare follow his example in the future.
