Guardian Heroes is a 2D side-scrolling beat 'em up with role-playing elements developed by Treasure and released for the Sega Saturn in 1996. The game follows a group of young adventurers whose discovery of an enchanted sword sets them on a course to alter the destiny of their kingdom. Players choose from four characters, each with a distinct fighting style, and navigate branching story paths that allow for multiple playthroughs with varied outcomes. RPG mechanics are woven into the action, lending the experience additional depth beyond straightforward brawling. Alongside the main story mode, Guardian Heroes features a dedicated versus mode supporting up to six players competing simultaneously in arena combat, making it a notable early example of a beat 'em up designed with substantial multiplayer ambitions. The game is widely regarded as one of Treasure's most ambitious Sega Saturn releases.
A supreme being created the universe to find ultimate warriors to hire as its personal soldiers. A vicious battle was waged between the Earth and Sky Spirits. The Sky Spirits bestowed incredible powers upon the humans, effectively making powerful wizards for their own gain. The human wizards joined the effort against the Earth Spirits, banishing them into the darkness. Soon after this was accomplished, the Sky Spirits grew fearful and jealous of the humans, and banished them all into the darkness with the Earth Spirits. Mankind instead opted for a more physical approach to life, and the Time of the Sword began.
