Hi-Octane is a racing and vehicular combat game developed by Bullfrog Productions and released in 1995 for PC (DOS), PlayStation, and Sega Saturn, with later availability on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. Built on the engine from Bullfrog's earlier Magic Carpet, the game was reportedly developed in approximately eight weeks as a way to meet a revenue gap, and some accounts suggest it originated from programmers experimenting in their spare time before Electronic Arts brought it to market. The game is distinguished by its unusually wide, open tracks and high sense of speed, which gave players considerable freedom of movement compared to typical racers of the era. However, the same engine that enabled this openness resulted in a notably short draw distance. Hi-Octane struggled commercially, in part due to its thematic overlap with Psygnosis's well-received Wipeout, which launched around the same time.
