Ingress is an augmented reality massively multiplayer RPG developed by Niantic Labs, originally launched for Android in 2013 and expanded to iOS in 2014. Set against a science fiction backdrop with an evolving open narrative, the game unfolds in the real world through GPS-based gameplay. Players align with one of two factions and claim "portals" located at public landmarks, monuments, and works of art, then connect those portals to form triangular virtual fields across geographic territory. Success is measured in "mind units," representing the population notionally controlled within each faction's fields, as tracked on a global Intel Map. Portal links can span anything from a few meters to hundreds of kilometers, with large-scale operations requiring significant logistical coordination. International links and fields are common, reflecting the game's worldwide following, which for some players has grown into a genuine lifestyle pursuit.
