Katamari Damacy is a puzzle-adventure game developed by Keita Takahashi and released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2, later available on PlayStation 3. The premise centers on the King of All Cosmos having inadvertently destroyed the stars, leaving his diminutive prince—barely half a foot tall—tasked with recreating them. The prince accomplishes this by rolling a sticky sphere called a Katamari through stylized Japanese environments, accumulating objects that adhere to its surface. As the Katamari grows, it becomes capable of collecting progressively larger items, beginning with push pins and paper clips and eventually encompassing people and cars. Each level imposes a size requirement and time limit set by the King, with separate bonus missions focused on restoring constellations. The game is played from a third-person perspective using dual analog sticks, and hidden presents scattered across levels unlock cosmetic accessories for the prince. A two-player competitive mode is also included. The game features distinctive off-beat visuals and an original soundtrack.
The game begins with a scene of the King destroying all of the stars and the Moon. The next day, the King is speaking to the Prince about what had happened the night before, about how he felt as one with the Cosmos, and that it was a beautiful symphony of destruction when he destroyed the stars. In the Japanese version of the game, the King openly admits he was drunk at the time, while the English release only implies this. He then tasks the Prince with returning the stars by rolling up objects in the Katamari, hopefully before anyone notices.
