About

Kingdom Hearts Re:coded is an action role-playing game developed by Square Enix 1st Production Department and released for Nintendo DS in 2010. A remake of the Japan-exclusive mobile title Kingdom Hearts coded, it is set after the events of Kingdom Hearts II, when Jiminy's Journal — a record of events from the first two games — becomes corrupted by bugs. King Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and Jiminy Cricket digitize the journal and send a virtual reconstruction of Sora, built from the journal's data, to explore its stored worlds and uncover what has gone missing. Character progression is handled through a Stat Matrix, where players install chips and unlock Command, Support Ability, and Accessory expansions. The Matrix also contains Cheat Tuners that adjust variables such as difficulty and item drop rates. Beyond the standard action RPG framework, certain worlds and boss encounters shift into entirely different genres, including side-scrolling, third-person shooter, and turn-based RPG segments. Completed worlds can be revisited for higher scores and side quests.

Storyline

Kingdom Hearts Re:coded follows the story of Donald Duck, Goofy, Jiminy Cricket, and King Mickey in Disney Castle after the events of Kingdom Hearts II. Jiminy Cricket was attempting to organize what is known as Jiminy's Journal after completing his adventure with Sora when he noticed a line that said "Thank Naminé". Looking further he discovers a message in the journal that he did not put there that states "Their hurting will be mended when you return to end it." King Mickey digitizes the journal and takes it in the simulated world in hopes of finding out more. He awakens Data-Sora on the digital version Destiny Islands and asks him reenact the contents of the journal in an attempt to uncover the identity of those who are "hurting".
