Lumines is a music-driven puzzle game developed by Gameloft, released in 2004 for PlayStation Portable, PC, Xbox 360, iOS, and legacy mobile devices. Players drop 2×2 blocks composed of two differently colored smaller squares into a playing field, rotating and positioning them to form 2×2 same-color arrangements. Rather than disappearing immediately, matched squares are cleared only when a timeline bar — synchronized to the background music — sweeps across the field. Larger chains of matching blocks can yield multiple simultaneous 2×2 squares, and consecutive clears across successive timeline passes build score multipliers. When a falling block meets a partial obstruction, the unblocked portion splits off and continues falling independently. Special jewel blocks, when incorporated into a valid match, eliminate all same-colored tiles adjacent to the cleared area. Bonus points are awarded for reducing the field to a single color or clearing all inactive tiles entirely. The game ends when accumulated unmatched blocks prevent new pieces from entering.
